So I walked into the living room the other day this week, and found the kids all hunched over the dining room table, writing. When I asked them what they were doing, they replied they were making their list of “have to do’s” in Lake Chelan for our annual vacation.
We usually go in July. It is March. Think they’re just a little excited?
Let me give you an idea of what we’re in for, in their words (with my comments in parentheses)
Luke (age 11): “SLIDEWATERS!!!” (Kids: sliding down the “purple haze” water slide. Mom: soaking up sun while watching said children. Everyone wins.)
Olivia (age 8): “Lunch at the Lakeview!!” (Confession: I love the Lakeview Drive-In, too. I get déjà vu every time I see her ordering her favorite strawberry milkshake, knowing I ordered the very same thing from the same window when I was a little girl.)
Jake (age 6): picture of a lake with a stick figure helpfully labeled “JAKE” in it, swimming (hey, he’s six. Sometimes a picture really is worth 1000 words.)
Olivia: “Picnic and dip at the forest part of the Lake.” (Every year, we head up the “North Shore” of the lake to Field’s Point for a big picnic. Yes, it’s green! Lots of trails in the pines, water even bluer than downlake, it’s juuuuust a bit cooler than in town, and the kids love our tradition to jump in the lake first thing when we get to the park.)
Luke: “Going to our big concert at night” (We’ve been doing this for a couple years now. John (the hubby) and I take the kids one evening to The Vogue in downtown Chelan. They always feature great music every weekend night, and it’s totally family friendly. So the little ones dance up a storm feeling like they’re big kids, while the REAL big kids get to try new wines and have a [semi] date night. Again, everybody wins.)
Olivia: “Paddling on the lake” (We’ve tried kayaks, actual boats, and jetskis before, but last year we rented stand up paddle boards and took them out on the lake. I think we found our winner. Easy to balance on, a kid can ride on one with you, and you don’t have to be on the Gwyneth fitness plan to have a good time. Although I’m sure she would approve. Mom tip: go early, when the lake is calmest.)
I hope these ideas help!
