| An exciting agricultural industry is “growing” in the Lake Chelan Valley! Though wine grapes were grown in the Valley nearly 100 years ago, in the past few years there has been a renewed interest in commercially producing Lake Chelan Valley wines. The first Valley winery opened August 2002, and the first wines made with local grapes are available at local stores and wineries. The five-year harvest forecast (based on 60 acres being planted by 2002) estimates there should be between 240 – 270 tons of grapes being produced in the Valley by 2006. Within the next 5 years, it is estimated that there will be 3 to 5 wineries in operation with each producing from 2,000 – 6,000 cases of wine per year. Some of the varieties that are anticipated to flourish in the valley include Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Lemberger, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Riesling.
