and Alex Elofson
Steve Cox will be creating a large throne/chair from 10 blocks of ice at corner of Woodin and Columbia Ave. Creative Ice has been in business for 22 years and has gained the artistry and customer service that is unmatched in the Puget Sound including our newest office in the Portland area.International master ice sculptor Steve Cox brings over 20 years of experience to every handcrafted sculpture. Steve began his career sculpting for world-class hotels, and quickly built a reputation for artistic, high-quality ice sculptures. He currently does an average of 10 - 15 sculptures a week for corporate events, parties, weddings, and other special occasions.Steve has competed in global ice sculpting events, placing among the leading international ice sculptors. He's taken top honors twice in the British Columbia competition, showcased his talents in Asahikawa, Japan, and recently placed first in the Olympic qualifying event, sending him and his team to the Salt Lake City Olympics.
Justin Cox has been around the ice block awhile. Justin has been raised around ice and started delivering ice carvings with his dad Steve at five years old. That explains why ice runs in his blood. Justin’s favorite part about ice carving is traveling to other place to carve.” I was here in Chelan last year and helped on the ice sleigh that everyone got their pictures taken in”. Justin has also sculpted in Ohio, and next month will be traveling to Colorado for a large scale project. I am the shop manager at Creative Ice in Kent, WA. In my six years at Creative Ice I have ran our ice lathe, programmed our CNC machine, carved a variety of popular sculptures, and setting up the delivery schedules.
Alex Elofson has been a long time family friend of the Cox family, as far back as when he and Steve Cox's son, Justin, attended preschool together. Before he started working with the Creative Ice team, Alex and his brother Eric started a film company in 2000 entering many of their films into Seattle area film festivals and receiving numerous awards. He also used his creative skills as a sous chef at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. However during the holiday seasons when business is in fast pace for Creative Ice, they asked Alex to work a couple days a week managing ice block production. He then graduated to CNC machine operator, and soon learned the fine touch of finishing sculptures and chisel work. He now works full time for Creative Ice putting his creative skills into this fragile art form.
Creative Wood Sculptures – Joaquin Quezada
Joaquin Quezada, owner of Creative Wood Sculptures, has been a chainsaw carver for 30 years in Enumclaw, Washington. He carved his first ice sculpture 11 years ago with an ice carving team in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they placed third in the two-man competition. He occasionally carves ice for close friends’ special events like weddings, but carves wood full time. Since that first trip to Fairbanks, he returned with a four-man team in 2007, placing seventh with “The Dragon Riders.” When asked which he prefers to carve, ice or wood, his reply is, “Well, wood you don’t get wet and cold, but ice you don’t have to pick-up the chips.”
