Hike Through the Lake Chelan Valley

Lake Chelan isn’t just a summer destination for wine tasting and water adventures—it’s also home to some of the most scenic hiking trails in Washington. Whether you’re looking for an easy family stroll, a moderate trek with sweeping lake views, or a challenging climb into the backcountry, the Lake Chelan Valley has a trail for you.

From high-alpine ridgelines to wildflower meadows and waterfalls, here’s your guide to some of the best hiking spots around Lake Chelan.

Trails Near Downtown Chelan

You don’t have to go far to enjoy a great hike! Just outside of downtown Chelan, a variety of trails offer options for walking, running, and biking.

  • Riverwalk Loop (1 mile) – A scenic loop between two bridges spanning the Chelan River in Historic Downtown Chelan. Perfect for a quick stroll or morning jog.
  • Planet Walk (2.4 miles round-trip) – Start at the Old Chelan Bridge and follow signs that guide you through a scale model of the solar system.
  • Chelan Reach One & Upper Gorge Trails – Includes loops like Eagle, Coyote, and Cutthroat, ideal for longer hikes and trail running.
  • Elephant Head (4 miles round-trip, moderate) – A moderately strenuous hike with breathtaking valley views. Perfect for a sunrise trek.

Getting There:

Most of these trails start from Riverwalk Park or downtown Chelan. Follow signs for trailheads along the Chelan River and surrounding areas.

Echo Ridge Summer Trails (25+ miles of trails)

Originally designed for winter sports, Echo Ridge has become a summer hiking haven. With nearly 30 miles of trails, there’s something for every skill level.

  • Easy Family Hike – The Pops (1.3 to 2.3 miles) – Rolling terrain with expansive views. Follow signs to the Lower Echo Trailhead.
  • Longer Loop – The Outback & Mallory’s Trail (5 miles) – A scenic loop with a spur up Mallory’s Trail for sweeping views. Start at the North Junction Trailhead.

Getting There:

  • Drive: 30 minutes from Chelan.
  • Directions: Take Highway 150 toward Manson, turn right on Boyd Road, and follow signs to Echo Ridge Nordic Ski Area.
  • Fees: $5 per vehicle (cash/check) OR a valid Northwest Forest Pass.

Fourth of July Mountain (2.5 miles round-trip)

One of the best day hikes in the lower Lake Chelan Basin! The steady but manageable elevation gain rewards hikers with stunning summit views.

Getting There:

  • Drive: 30 minutes from Chelan.
  • Directions: Head to Antilon Lake north of Manson. Park near the earthen dam at the lake’s south end. Cross the dam to find the trailhead.

Pot Peak Trail (9.5 miles round-trip, strenuous)

For a challenging and rewarding hike, Pot Peak offers steep elevation gain and stunning vistas.

Getting There:

  • Drive: 30 minutes from Chelan.
  • Directions: Take Highway 97A south for 4 miles to South Shore Road. Follow it to the 25-Mile Creek area, then take Shady Pass Road (FS #5900) to Slide Ridge Road (FS #8410). Park at the Pot Peak Trailhead.
