Job Description:

Lake Chelan School District has an opening for a Multi-lingual Specialist Teacher starting the 2023-24 school year. This position will collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff in grades 6-12 to create a system that ensures academic learning is accessible to students whose dominant language is other than English. The multi-lingual specialist is accountable to the building administrator for interpreting and executing the responsibilities below, in addition to any other responsibilities that are assigned. The multi-lingual specialist maintains contact with parents, community organizations, and other agencies to promote understanding of the objectives of the program and the school district.

Essential Functions:
• Confer with teachers, counselors, para educators, multilingual learner teachers, administrators, students, and parents to determine language and academic needs for multilingual learner students
• Build school-wide capacity of best practices for multilingual learner students through co-planning/teaching, modeling, planning, and facilitating staff professional development, and collaborating with teachers and building administrators
• Plan, observe and model core lessons aligned to the WIDA Standards
• Develop individualized academic programs designed to meet the specific needs of multilingual learner students
• Increase the academic performance of multilingual learners by designing and implementing pullout and/or push-in language acquisition instruction
• Work with small groups of students to improve their language skills and academic performance using evidence-based language acquisition strategies, including GLAD and SIOP
• Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to achieve an effective and positive learning environment
• Articulate and implement the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards.
• Assist in orienting, training, scheduling, and assigning para educators to work with multilingual learner students.
• Plan for and oversee small group lessons for paraeducators
• Participate in assigned professional development to support initiatives related to multilingual learner student achievement
• Attend MTSS meetings and IEP’s for multilingual learner students
• Enter data and keep multilingual learner files in compliance with federal, state, and local mandates
• Track and monitor individual progress of multilingual learner students
• Administer formal and informal assessments to further determine student needs
• Assist the administration of all state mandated testing for multilingual learner students
• Communicate regularly with families regarding the academic performance and language development of multilingual learner students

Minimum Qualifications:
• Washington State Teaching Certificate and EL Endorsement.
• Demonstrates ability to develop and implement appropriate positive behavior interventions for students.
• Possess general knowledge and varied experience that demonstrates leadership capabilities in an educational setting
• Ability to effectively work with diverse populations
• Passion for continuous learning and system improvement to better support multilingual learner students and teaching staff
• Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred

SALARY
Salary as determined by placement of District Salary Schedule.
