Job Description:
The Lake Chelan School District has an immediate opening for a paraeducator to work up to 6.75 hours per day with the possible addition of more time riding the school bus with students in the mornings or afternoons; depending on needs. This position will support Special Education in Chelan Middle and High Schools with the Skills and Transition Education Program (STEP).
Position Overview:
The STEP UP (Skills and Transition Education Program) Paraprofessional supports students with special needs in developing essential life skills for daily living and independence. This role involves working under the supervision of a special education teacher to implement individualized education plans (IEPs), providing direct assistance to students, and helping create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Compensation:
Salary range is $22.25 – 25.91 per hour dependent upon prior school district experience in the same job classification. (An additional 75 cents ($.75) per hour is available for an individual with an AA degree, 1 dollar ($1.00) per hour for a BA degree and 25 cents ($.25) per hour for 50 clock hours.)
Qualifications:
● Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or 72 college credits OR pass the ParaPro Assessment
● Experience: Previous experience working with children with disabilities preferred.
● Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. Basic knowledge of child development and special education practices
Key Responsibilities:
• Student Support:
○ Assist students with disabilities in learning and practicing daily living skills such as hygiene, dressing, grooming, and feeding.
○ Provide support with academic tasks, adapting materials, and modifying curriculum as directed by the special education teacher.
○ Support students in developing social skills, communication skills, and appropriate behavior.
• Instructional Assistance:
○ Implement IEP goals and objectives under the supervision of the special education teacher.
○ Use a variety of instructional techniques and learning strategies to meet the individual needs of students.
• Classroom Management:
○ Help maintain a safe and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning.
○ Monitor student behavior and implement behavior management strategies as directed.
• Data Collection and Documentation:
○ Collect and record data on student progress and behavior as required by the special education teacher and IEP team.
○ Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
• Collaboration and Communication:
○ Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other staff to support student learning and development.
○ Participate in team meetings, professional development, and training sessions as required.
• Physical Assistance:
○ Provide physical assistance to students as needed, including lifting, transferring, and positioning.
○ Assist with the use of adaptive equipment and technology.
• Other Duties:
○ Perform other related duties as assigned by the special education teacher or school administration.
○ Support the overall mission and vision of the school and special education program.
• Physical Demands:
○ Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity, which may include moderate lifting and positioning of students.
○ Ability to remain on feet for extended periods of time.
